A British national has become the first Briton to donate blood in Gozo following the lifting of a long-standing restriction on blood donations from people who lived in the UK during the period associated with the “mad cow disease” outbreak.

Posting on Facebook, Gozo SPCA shared a photograph of Mark Thorogood donating blood on Sunday morning, saying he was the first Briton to donate blood in Gozo after the ban was lifted.

The restriction, introduced around 20 years ago, applied to people in Malta who had lived in the UK for a cumulative period of six months or more between 1980 and 1996.

The measure was introduced as a precaution against variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), commonly associated with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or “mad cow disease”.

At the time, there was no reliable screening test for the disease, prompting authorities to impose restrictions on blood donations from people who had spent significant periods in the UK during the relevant years.

The ban was lifted earlier this week, with the decision announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Ian Borg.
