Speaker of the House Carmelo Abela met former Speaker Anton Tabone, Gozo Bishop Anton Teuma, youth representatives and the OASI Foundation during an official visit to Gozo focused on social and democratic issues.
Abela’s meeting with Tabone, who served as Speaker between 1998 and 2008, centred on the responsibilities and challenges of the Speaker’s office and how parliamentary work has evolved over the years.
The two also discussed the running of Parliament, with Abela thanking Tabone for his service to the Maltese Parliament. Tabone, in turn, wished the current Speaker success in his duties.
At the Gozo Curia, Abela met Bishop Anton Teuma and Curia staff to discuss social issues affecting Gozo, including challenges faced by families and young people. The importance of cooperation between institutions was also raised during the meeting.
Abela subsequently met representatives of the Gozo University Group, the Diocesan Youth Commission Gozo and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ.
The discussions with young people focused on employment and career prospects, volunteering, political participation, the environment and access to accommodation.
The participants also highlighted the need for existing schemes aimed at young people to be better publicised and made more accessible.
Abela said young people should continue developing their skills and talents and using them for the benefit of their communities. He also said he wanted to continue strengthening links between young people and Parliament.
The Speaker’s visit concluded with a meeting at the OASI Foundation, where he was welcomed by chief executive Noel Xerri.
Discussions focused on the foundation’s work in preventing and treating addiction, as well as the support it provides to people affected by addiction and their families.
