Xagħra celebrates Victory Day

Xagħra is marking Victory Day today with a ceremony attended by members of the local community

Xagħra is marking Victory Day today with a ceremony attended by members of the local community.

The event, held in Victory Square, forms part of the village’s celebrations marking 8 September, with a programme that includes religious and historical elements.

The commemorations began with a concelebrated Mass at the Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady, followed by the singing of the Te Deum.

An official ceremony was then held in Victory Square, including an address by Xagħra mayor Victor Curmi and a historical re-enactment by the Xagħra Historical Re-enactment Organisation depicting the Great Siege of 1565.

The programme also featured a second re-enactment focusing on Malta during the Second World War, with events set in 1943.

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri and PN shadow minister for Gozo Frank Anthony Tabone were among those in attendance.

The Malta Police Force Band participated in the ceremony, while an Armed Forces of Malta Honour Guard was also present.

Proceedings included the Last Post, a minute’s silence and the Reveille, before concluding with the laying of wreaths and the playing of the Maltese National Anthem.

Victory Day is commemorated annually on 8 September and marks important moments in Malta’s history, including the lifting of the Great Siege of 1565 and Malta’s wartime experience.
