Gozitan singer Mikayla returns with new dance-pop single Fortune Teller

Gozitan singer-songwriter Mikayla has released her latest single, Fortune Teller, marking another step in her return to original music after first making her name as a child performer and Junior Eurovision contestant.

The alternative dance-pop track, released on 24 September 2026, explores the difficulty of letting go of someone while holding on to the possibility that a relationship could have turned out differently.

“I poured a lot of feelings, memories and questions into this song — especially that feeling of knowing you need to let someone go, while secretly wishing the story could have been different,” Mikayla said.

Born Mikaela Bajada, the 27-year-old Gozitan singer began performing at a young age, influenced by artists including Kylie Minogue, Michael Jackson, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus. With the support of her father, she took vocal lessons and began entering competitions, while also performing in school concerts and mini-musicals.

Her early career included auditions for choirs including Stagecoach Choir in 2004 and the Joseph Calleja Children’s Choir in 2009, which gave her opportunities to appear on television.

A major milestone came in 2009, when Mikayla and her friend Francesca won the Malta Junior Eurosong with their duet ‘Double Trouble’. The pair went on to represent Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Ukraine, finishing in eighth place.

As her voice matured, Mikayla became involved in theatre choirs, operas and musicals, while continuing to pursue dance. At 13, she joined contemporary dance school Naupaca Dance Factory and later developed a following through song covers on social media and guest performances with local bands.

She subsequently stepped away from official performances to concentrate on her studies and began a nursing career at 22. After graduating and settling into her professional life, she returned to music through songwriting.

Under the stage name MIKAYLA, she released her debut original song, ‘One Day (For Real)’, in 2023. This was followed in 2024 by ‘blue-eyed angel’, written in memory of her childhood best friend.

Mikayla also turned to Maltese-language songwriting, co-writing ‘Wiċċ ta’ Grazzja’ with Julie Pomorski. Released on 31 March 2026, the song was dedicated to her mother.

Fortune Teller now adds a new chapter to her catalogue, as Mikayla continues to write and perform while also appearing live with her band, Mikayla & Band, at bars and restaurants around Malta.
