Geological investigations at Calypso’s Cave in Xagħra, are expected to pave the way for preservation and stabilisation works aimed at preventing further deterioration of the site
Geological investigations at Calypso’s Cave in Xagħra, are expected to pave the way for preservation and stabilisation works aimed at preventing further deterioration of the site.
The update was given by Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri on Tuesday in response to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Frank Anthony Tabone on Tuesday.
Camilleri said tender SPD3/2026/031, covering geological investigations at and around Calypso’s Cave within the limits of Xagħra, was published on 30 September and is due to close on 21 October.
Once the tender has been awarded and the necessary geological investigations completed, the process will move on to the preparation and publication of a separate tender for the preservation and stabilisation of the cave.
Tabone had asked the minister to provide an update on the project and clarify whether any work had already been carried out to preserve the cave. He also asked for details of the work completed so far and the measures planned to prevent the site from continuing to collapse.
Camilleri’s reply did not specify whether any preservation works had already been undertaken, focusing instead on the geological investigations that must precede the planned stabilisation works.
