Justice Minister Clifton Grima says Gozo’s new courthouse is expected to be completed by December 2028
The new courthouse in Gozo is expected to be completed by December 2028, with plans currently being prepared for submission to the Planning Authority, Justice Minister Clifton Grima said.
Grima was replying to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Frank Anthony Tabone.
Grima said the project is at the design and planning stage, with renovation works set to begin once planning approval is obtained.
At the same time, tender documents will be drawn up for the procurement of furniture and equipment needed for the courthouse.
The courthouse is expected to begin operating once the renovation works are complete and all the necessary services and equipment have been installed, Grima said.
The government agreed to acquire the former Downtown Hotel site in Rabat, Gozo, for €6.325 million to house the new law courts. The site was selected following a public market consultation launched in 2022, during which 11 submissions were assessed.
The new courthouse is intended to replace the existing courts in the 17th-century building in the Citadel, which has struggled to meet modern requirements for space, accessibility and safety.
