Momentum calls for greater autonomy for Gozo and Fort Chambray national park

Momentum has called for greater regional autonomy for Gozo, greener transport links with Malta and the creation of a national park at Fort Chambray as part of its pre-budget proposals for 2027.

The proposals include giving Gozo the status of a formally recognised European region with its own directly elected regional council, empowered to access and manage EU regional development funds for local infrastructure and community projects.

The party said Gozitans should have a greater say in decisions affecting the island’s development and investment priorities.

Momentum is also proposing investment in zero-emission or hybrid vessels for inter-island transport, using European green infrastructure funding to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The proposal comes as the government plans to renew the Gozo Channel fleet.

Another proposal is the creation of a national park at Fort Chambray, protecting undeveloped and unrestored areas from further commercial exploitation. The plan would also involve safeguarding the site’s heritage, restoring the historic British barracks and providing a green space for the community.

Momentum treasurer Carmel Asciak said Gozo’s future should be shaped by its residents, with development serving the community rather than coming at the expense of the island’s identity and open spaces.

The party also warned that Victoria’s potential designation as European Capital of Culture in 2031 should avoid the problems it believes followed Valletta’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2018.

While acknowledging the refurbishment and regeneration of derelict buildings in Valletta, Momentum argued that the capital had become increasingly difficult for residents to live in, citing high rents, late-night noise and the proliferation of tables and chairs in the streets.

It said Victoria’s 2031 cultural programme should ensure residents remain welcome and are encouraged to continue living in the city, preserving the everyday realities of Gozitan life.

The proposals form part of Momentum’s wider vision for a fairer, greener and more sustainable Malta and Gozo.
