Hedgehog rescued in Għasri released back into the wild

A hedgehog rescued in Għasri after his mother was killed on the road has been released back into the wild following months of rehabilitation.

Named Justin, the hedgehog was found alongside two siblings, both of whom died despite efforts to save them. He was the only survivor and was taken into the care of Nature Trust – FEE Malta’s Wildlife Rescue Team.

Volunteers, Betty in particular, cared for Justin through his vulnerable early days, helping him grow stronger and gradually become independent. 

Nature Trust said Justin was eventually ready to fend for himself and was released into vegetation, where he quickly disappeared.

The organisation reminded the public that hedgehogs and other wildlife rescued by its team are protected species and cannot legally be harmed or kept as pets.
