Nadur Primary School has reduced its primary energy demand by 82.6% following an EU-funded investment that also improved the building’s energy performance rating from Class D to Class A.

The results were highlighted during a visit to the Gozo school by European Commissioners Piotr Serafin and Glenn Micallef, accompanied by Education Minister Byron Camilleri and Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri.

The project was funded through Malta’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, supported by the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme. The overall €10 million allocation covered energy efficiency improvements at both Nadur Primary School and Ħal Għaxaq Primary School.

The investment included extensive upgrades to the school’s facilities, accessibility and energy efficiency, creating a more comfortable and sustainable environment for students and educators.

The European Commissioners met students and teachers during their visit, which showcased the impact of European funding on educational infrastructure.

Students explained the stories behind the names chosen for their classrooms, using a topographical map of Nadur, while the delegation visited several classes and spoke to pupils and educators about their experiences at the school.

Byron Camilleri said the visit demonstrated how cooperation between Malta and the EU could translate into tangible benefits for students and educators.

He said investment in education was an investment in the country’s future, adding that the government would continue working with European institutions to develop modern, inclusive and sustainable learning environments in both Malta and Gozo.

Clint Camilleri said the visit allowed the commissioners to see first-hand the improvements made at Nadur Primary School through European funding.

He said the government intended to continue investing in Gozo’s schools, pointing to recent works at Kerċem Primary School and planned investment in schools in Żebbuġ and Għarb.

Investment in education remained central to improving school infrastructure and ensuring students had the best possible conditions for learning and development, he added.

During the visit, the delegation joined all the school’s students in the central courtyard for a flag-raising ceremony, accompanied by the Maltese national anthem, the school anthem and the European anthem.

The visit also highlighted the role of cooperation between national authorities and EU institutions in promoting education, sustainable development and opportunities for future generations.
