Gozo shadow minister Frank Anthony Tabone criticises lack of dedicated Gozo investment plan and warns higher accommodation and ferry costs could discourage domestic tourism
Gozo has been overlooked in Budget 2027, according to Gozo shadow minister Frank Anthony Tabone, who has criticised the lack of a dedicated chapter for the island and warned that higher tourism-related charges could make it more expensive for visitors to spend a holiday there.
In a statement published on Facebook on Monday evening, Tabone argued that the budget failed to outline a clear plan for key Gozo projects, including better roads, a new hospital, improved connectivity through new vessels and an airstrip, and investment in the infrastructure of Mġarr harbour.
He also raised concerns about increases in the eco-contribution and ferry fares for tourists travelling on the Gozo Channel and fast ferry services, arguing that these additional costs could put the island at a disadvantage as a tourist destination.
“How are we going to strengthen tourism in Gozo like this?” Tabone asked, warning that higher costs could discourage visitors and affect businesses, workers and families who depend on the sector.
Tabone also questioned the impact of the revised accommodation charges on Maltese residents taking holidays in Gozo.
Under the figures cited in his statement, Maltese adults spending a holiday in Gozo would pay €8 per night in a hotel or €10 per night in a short-let accommodation, subject to maximum charges of €64 and €80 per person respectively.
He questioned whether the additional costs would encourage domestic tourism, particularly among Maltese families considering a stay on the sister island. “Gozo and the Gozitans deserve much better than this,” Tabone said.
